When an infected black-leged or deer tick bit a human, it transmits a bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi which causes Lyme disease. The tick gets infected due to feeding on an infected bird, mice or deer. For a person to get this disease the tick needs to be present on the skin for 36 to 48 hours. If you succeeded in removing the tick before that you will not be affected. Most people with this disease have no clue of when they get bit by the tick.

Symptoms may start to be visible anywhere from 3 to 30 days and vary depending upon the type of infection. Lyme disease was first identified in the year 1975 in the town of Old Lyme. People who live in wooded areas or spend time in these areas are prone to this disease. People who have domestic animals and visit wooded areas have a higher chance of having this disease.

There are three main causes of Lyme disease, these three are:

Borrelia Burgdorferi

Borrelia Burgdorfer is the prime reason for Lyme disease. This bacteria gets transmitted from a tick to the human body. The tick that carries these bacterias is so tiny that you might not even see it, its size is no longer than a sesame seed. Also, the saliva of the tick has an anaesthetic-like substance that softens your skin due to which you don’t feel the bite.

The Blacklegged Tick

The Blacklegged Tick also known as Ixodes pacificus is the supplier of Lyme disease on the west coast United States. While the Eastern black-legged tick also known as deer tick is responsible for spreading Lyme disease on the east coast and midwestern states. As per research, about 80 million Americans reside in the place where these ticks are common and thus are at high-risk.

Host Animals

The tick feeds on various animals and can easily survive for years on just a small portion of blood. These tiny creatures are born from eggs and get affected at its nymph stage due to feeding on small animals like mice, squirrels, birds, etc, which are already affected by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi. In its other feeding cycle, the tick passes the bacteria to other animals and humans.

The symptoms and its severity are different from person to person. The period when the symptoms will appear also vary, sometimes the symptoms occur after only three days while sometimes it can even take months or years. The most common symptoms are as below:

  • Severe headaches
  • Neck stiffness
  • Rashes on the body
  • Arthritis, with deadly joint and knee pains
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Inflammation of the brain and spinal cord
  • Extreme pain, deadness, or tingling in the hands or feet
  • Fever and headaches
  • Sleep Problems
  • Difficulty in concentration
